Celebrating 75 years of guide dogs
2006 saw Guide Dogs celebrating the 75th anniversary of the first four guide dogs on the streets of the UK. Here's a glimpse of what celebratory events took place over the year: a launch event at the Docklands Musuem in January, had an extra special prescence at Crufts in March and had the Blue Peter Bark in the Park events in May – where we teamed up again with children’s programme Blue Peter – and raised lots of awareness around the country for the work we do. In July, thousands of people helped us celebrate at our Summer Gala. We presented the Guide Dog of the Year Awards in September and the National Volunteer Awards in November.
Of course October was a very special month as we celebrated Guide Dog Week, and Blue Peter presenter Andy Akinwolere announced that he would be puppy-walking Magic – a very special guide dog puppy named by Blue Peter viewers.
Another of the year's highlights was the Liverpool Anglican Cathedral 75th Anniversary Service, on 4 December.
Our stories
Our Stories were dedicated to celebrating the unique partnerships between guide dogs and their owners. The pages feature inspirational stories about the ways in which guide dogs have transformed the lives of their visually-impaired owners by providing independence, dignity, confidence and freedom of mobility.
