Focus on: Andrea - Puppy Training Supervisor

I always knew that I wanted to work with Andrea, Puppy Training Supervisoranimals but I wanted a career, not just a job. An old school friend mentioned Guide Dogs. It was something that I had never thought about, but the chance of working with dogs as well as helping others really appealed to me.

My friend put me in touch with Elaine, a Puppy Training Supervisor at Guide Dogs. I telephoned and questioned her intensely about what I needed to do to improve my chances at getting a job. I was lucky enough to get through the interview and was offered a job as a Guide Dog Trainer in Wokingham, Berkshire. The amazing thing is that when I moved back to my home town of Bolton four years later to start training as a Puppy Training Supervisor, guess who my trainer was…Elaine!

16 years and two children later I am still working for Guide Dogs and love every minute of it. The volunteer Puppy Walkers I work with are amazing, they take puppies into their homes for the first year of their lives. They love and educate them to the best of their ability, and most of all they put up with me visiting and advising them! To see a puppy and watch it grow from six weeks of age to guiding a visually impaired person, really is amazing. It is the kind of satisfaction that few jobs offer and is something I am very proud to be a part of.
