Focus on: Jan - Access to Work Support Worker

Hi, I am Jan and I am the Access to Work Jan - Access to Work Support WorkerSupport Worker to John (Policy Business Partner for Transport and Travel). You may have noticed that our surnames are the same. This is because, when off duty, I am John’s wife.

I am his eyes (not his brains). This means I assist him in all roles that normally require sight, such as driving, travelling and guiding safely and efficiently in unfamiliar environments. I also help with reading print documents, assisting when technology lets him down, checking documents written by John for minor spelling errors and layout, taking photos for promotional material and designing PowerPoint presentations to match John Welsman’s requirements when giving talks. I also support with the care of his guide dog Breck, when we are out.

I have volunteered for Guide Dogs for many years, assisting with fundraising, and I adore dogs and their willingness to work for humans.

"I feel this type of work is my vocation, as I believe all my previous career work and training skill have given me a strong empathy with people with impairments and understand their views, frustrations and needs."
