Focus on: Justin - HR Pension and Core Benefits Specialist

My career prior to joining Guide Dogs had Justin - HR Pension and Core Benefits Specialistalways been in the private sector, so after relocating to Reading following several years of living and working in London, I was over the moon when I was offered a position here at Guide Dogs in 2006. As a dog lover I’d be lying if I didn’t confess to being drawn to the thought of all those puppies, but my exposure to blind and partially sighted people had been extremely limited. All of that was about to change.

I’ve always worked in a HR environment and have looked after employee benefits. People always seem to think that I just look after our pension schemes but in fact, to quote a colleague, “I don’t just do pensions!” From childcare to Eye Care Vouchers and occupational health to the Employee Assistance Programme, the contractual management and provision of these benefits fall under my remit. And of course our pension schemes too!

Trying to get materials for our blind and visually impaired members of staff from external suppliers in accessible formats is a constant challenge, there’s not a week goes by that I’m not on the phone trying to educate suppliers on the importance of providing accessible documents to all of their clients, not just the sighted ones.
