Volunteer at Redbridge

Volunteering

Our professional staff are supported by a large number of volunteers who help in a variety of ways. We currently have the following volunteer vacancies:

Tour Guides
We’re looking for volunteers to lead and assist on tours of the Redbridge Training School and its facilities. Tours take place on Wednesday afternoons and last about 2 hours.

Full training and support is given so no previous knowledge is needed – just an enthusiasm for Guide Dogs and its work and an ability to communicate with all sorts of different people.

Boarders
We are looking for boarders to look after one of our dogs in their own home. There are two main boarding options:

Training Dog Boarders - look after trainee guide dogs in the evenings and at weekends for the 16 weeks they are at the Guide Dog Training School. Training dog boarders should:

  • Live in a house or flat with a secure garden.
  • Be able to bring the dog to the school each morning and collect it each evening.
  • Be happy to undertake training (2 sessions) and to follow Guide Dogs rules for dog care and behaviour.

Respite Boarders - if a daily trip to the training school is not for you, we are also looking for boarders to give a temporary full-time home to a dog. This may be a trainee which has been withdrawn from the training programme or a retired dog which needs a temporary home whilst we find it a new permanent one. Volunteers should

  • Live in a house or flat with a secure garden.
  • Be at home for most of the day (dogs can’t be left for more than 4 hours) or be able to take the dog to work.
  • Be happy to undertake training (2 sessions) and to follow Guide Dogs rules for dog care and behaviour.

Puppy Walkers
Puppy walkers give a home for a Guide Dog puppy for its first year - from about 7 weeks to approximately 14 months. They bring up the puppy to be a well behaved, well socialised dog which is ready to start its formal guide dog training. Puppy walkers need to be at home for most of the day or, where appropriate, able to take a puppy to work. For more information on becoming a puppy walker please visit here.
