My Guide

MyGuide provides accredited sighted guiding training to service providers, local organisations and sighted volunteers to help break down barriers and dispel common myths around sight loss. The MyGuide services are provided by Rick Allbrook, who is the local MyGuide Ambassador.

The objective of MyGuide is to help visually impaired people get out and about, and if necessary, challenge accessibility issues that prevent visually impaired people accessing services. MyGuide also offers visual awareness training to help sighted people appreciate what level of assistance is appropriate for people living with sight loss.

In the South West we have undertaken the following activity:

Hospital Eye Units

MyGuide training has been delivered to Eye Units in Bristol, Exeter, Torbay and Truro. Training links have been established with both trainee Optometrists at Plymouth University and Ophthalmic nurses who train at University Hospital Bristol.

Devon Library Services

Each library in the Devon Library Services area has received MyGuide training to help staff understand the accessibility needs of visually impaired people.

Bus Operators

First Bus have all received Train the Trainer sessions so that bus drivers have access to MyGuide training as part of their ongoing professional driver development. Stagecoach have also received MyGuide training in Exeter, Torquay and Barnstaple for all supervisor drivers.

First Great Western trains

Various train station staff and Passenger Assistance Teams have received MyGuide training to help support the needs of visually impaired clients who require travel assistance.

Devon in Sight

The local blind society for Devon delivers MyGuide in Mid-Devon and Torbay via the their volunteers to the local befriending service. All their volunteers have accessed MyGuide training and key volunteers have been trained to work on an individual basis with visually impaired people.

Cornwall Blind Association

The local blind society for Cornwall is currently planning to develop the MyGuide Service, and it is hoped that the MyGuide training will attract more volunteers who are interested supporting the visually impaired community in Cornwall.

Action for Blind People and Plymouth Guild

Both organisations run courses for visually impaired people wanting to find out information about services available to them locally. MyGuide provides local training to course attendees so that visually impaired people know how to set their own standards and be guided correctly and avoid bad guiding experiences.
