Members of Northumbria County Council Highways department, take a blindfold walk around Morpeth.

New Image2On 10 June, six members from their team experienced some of the difficulties faced by people who are blind or partially sighted, in getting around the cluttered streets of towns in Northumberland.

The team were guided around A-boards, café furniture and shop displays, by sighted volunteers from NAG (Northumberland low vision Action Group), one of our My Guide volunteers, as well as staff from Guide New Image1Dogs and RNIB.

We want the Council to consider a "no A-boards policy" and to consult with visually impaired people when planning changes to the built environment such as crossings, tactile paving and shared surfaces, where pedestrians and vehicles share the same area without any kerb delineation.
