Research programme

Research grant applications

Currently the programme is closed to applications, however Guide Dogs issue grants for research proposals each year.  Contact the research department for further details.

Our research programme covers two main areas:

  • Opthalmic research - we fund ophthalmic research that may lead to better diagnosis or treatment of eye conditions, or preserve sight and prevent further visual loss in people who are partially-sighted.
  • Canine research - we fund and undertake in-house research which enhances our dogs' health and wellbeing and improves how they perform through their working life.

What projects are we currently undertaking?

We currently support a wide range of research projects which are being undertaken either in-house by our research staff or by externally-funded research investigators.

How does research fit into our strategy?

It provides sound evidence to inform our services, policy and campaigning activities - helping us to achieve our strategic goals.

Ophthalmic: Around 93 per cent of people registered as blind or partially-sighted in the UK have some remaining vision, and our ophthalmic research is aimed at preventing further sight loss. It is also designed to increase our understanding of eye conditions, the emotional impact of sight loss, and its effect on the ability of people to get around.

Canine: The guide dog is our unique contribution to enabling blind and partially-sighted people to get around independently, and the health and welfare of our dogs remains paramount. Our canine research supports this, and helps us improve the guide dog service, by enhancing our understanding of dogs? health and behaviour.

How do we decide which research proposals to fund?

We robustly and comprehensively review all proposals for research undertaken by or on behalf of Guide Dogs, to ensure the work is of high scientific integrity, and meets the organisation?s needs and research objectives.

The process relies on both external and internal expertise, and on consultation with and feedback from our stakeholders. Read more about the decision making process.
