Another person's independence starts right here

Dog Lead 525

Dave has just started making the next guide dog harness that will enable a person who is blind or partially sighted to live independently. He is part of a small team at our workshop near Warwick who design, hand-craft and repair hundreds of harnesses every week.

“I absolutely love what I do”, says Dave. “The best moments are when someone phones up and says, ‘Dave, I’ve got a problem’. We never take a ‘one size fits all’ approach and there’s always a solution. Maybe someone has balance problems or finds it difficult to hold the harness for a long time. We can build something to suit them.”

25 years ago, Dave saw this job advertised in the newspaper and because his family were Puppy Walkers, he applied. He has since learned all the leather working, metal working and other unique skills needed to build our iconic guide dog harnesses from start to finish.

Today, he is still constantly inspired by the people his work is helping. “Recently, I was privileged enough to get an email from a client that said, ‘Thank you, David, you have made my life better.’ Knowing you’ve made that happen, it’s very rewarding.”
