Dogs

Guide Dogs was set up in 1931 to give blind and partially-sighted people greater independence. Seventy years later, we’re recognised as the world leader for breeding and training guide dogs. These exceptionally trained animals are still very much the centre of all our work and the sight of a guide dog and its owner getting on with life has become so familiar that it hardly causes a stir.

Whilst there are around 5,000 working guide dogs in the UK today, we care for around 8,000 dogs, including breeding stock, puppies, dogs in training and retired dogs. Our commitment is to every dog for life which is why the lifetime cost of each dog is around £35,000 (including all breeding and training costs, vet and feeding bills).

Not only do we rely on voluntary contributions for our income, but also on voluntary help.
