A proven hero

Hero hound Barney is pictured sitting on the floor, proudly wearing his gold Dogs Unite cape, with owners and fellow travellers Bob and Jos sitting next to him.Earlier this year we introduced the Dogs Unite Gold Cape: the super special award reserved for Dogs Unite heroes who have gone above and beyond in aid of Guide Dogs.

It’ll come as no surprise to Dogs Unite regulars that the first Gold Cape has been awarded none other than Barney, the incredible Flat Coat Retriever who walked over 1,400 miles from Lands’ End to John O’Groats in aid of Guide Dogs.

Alongside his human sidekicks Bob and Jos, Barney not only padded the length of the UK, but also encouraged over 1,200 dogs and their owners to step out and take part in Match a Mile for Barney - the sponsored dog walk they did at a time and place to suit them.

Once united, these incredible canines not only matched the miles walked by Barney himself, but together with Barney raised a total of £30,000: enough to buy 1,200 new iconic white guide dog harnesses, or fund 600 guide dog puppies in their first stage of training!

Well done Barney, gold is definitely your colour!
