Visual impairment is a fact of life for thousands of people across Northern Ireland. We’re campaigning alongside them for the rights that most sighted people take for granted.

Our key campaigns in Northern Ireland are:

Streets Ahead

We want improvements to the design of our towns and streets that will give blind and partially sighted people the same access as everyone else. We work with local councils and street designers as well as encouraging everyone to help make their streets inclusive for all.

Talking Buses

We're lobbying for legislation that will call for audio visual information on buses to make them more accessible to people who are blind and partially sighted people. Our lobbying is making a difference as the introduction of audio visual systems to assist bus passengers with a visual impairment was announced for the Belfast Metro area. We will continue to call for this to be extended throughout the Translink network so that people with a visual impairment living outside of Belfast can also enjoy the same freedom of movement that AV brings.

Dog Attacks

Out of control dogs cause a problem for everyone, but the effect on a guide dog and its owner can be devastating.

Research shows on average more than eight guide dogs are attacked every month. The stress this causes for dogs and their owners is unnecessary and damaging.

In addition, it is often difficult for guide dog owners to report dog attacks. Since guide dog owners have very limited or no vision, they may be unable to give a description of the dog or its owner.

Safe and Sound

Electric, Hybrid and modern combustion engine cars are making today’s vehicles quieter; posing a serious risk to blind and partially sighted pedestrians who rely on hearing vehicles to cross roads safely. Guide Dogs supports moves for international mandatory sounds on quiet and electric vehicles, especially at low speeds.
