Creating a press release

Publicising what you are going to do in your local media is a fantastic way to attract support, whilst raising awareness of Guide Dogs and our work.

The best way to generate publicity is to send a press release to your local media. A press release contains the key information about what you are doing and why, and who you are doing the challenge for. The key thing to bear in mind is that it should be written in a 'journalistic' style; so don’t forget to make it interesting!

To help you get as much publicity and support as possible, we have provided template press releases for you to download and use. Just fill in the blank areas with the appropriate information and then send it to the newsdesk of your local newspapers, radio and tv – their contact details will be on the internet or in your telephone directory.

Here is an example of a completed press release that you could send to your local media:

You can find out more about the work of Guide Dogs in the 'about us' area of the website, or you might want to use examples of some of our case studies. Don't forget to include a digital photo, a link to your Justgiving site and your contact details as they may also want to interview you.

Many newspapers (and their readers) like a follow up to the story – this could be how much money you raised and a photo of you presenting the money to Guide Dogs.
