Paul Chapman - aka Chappo - has been running and fundraising for Guide Dogs for since 2006, this year he will be taking part in the Bath Half MarathonLondon Marathon and Loch Ness Marathon. Here we find out what inspired him, and how he continues to put the 'fun' into fundraising!

Why do you run for Guide Dogs?

One word; team! I was told I was part of Team Guide Dogs and that is exactly how the Events Team make you feel. Most other charities just wanted to know how much, when and how often. With Guide Dogs it is more of what they can do for you. You become involved with real life examples of the charity, are shown what your money does and where it goes and you feel part of the whole process.

How did you get involved?

After being won over by the helpfulness of the Events Team when I expressed initial interest, I decided to give it a go at the Bath Half Marathon. From that moment on, there was no turning back. I was fortunate enough to be able to run, so why not use that to raise some money at the same time. After four events in 2006 I cannot wait for future events!

How have you fundraised?

It depends how much you want to raise? The more effort you put in the more you will get out of it, both financially and in fulfillment. Its great to use general sponsorship and the ‘lucky pup’ cards but the real fun is holding a fundraising event. My most successful events have been Auction Nights. Other fun events are holding quizzes, raffles or fun days at work such as ‘bake a cake day’ or ‘dress down’ days.

What about your Auction Night?

This is hard work but well worth it when you count up the money raised. I decided to write letters to local facilities such as restaurants, shops and attractions. I also wrote to larger targets such as sports clubs, business contacts, family attractions and well known high street chains. I described why I was holding an event, how it would benefit them and explained what Guide Dogs do and what various amounts of money are worth and can provide. You will be amazed what responses you get, but always ensure you write back and acknowledge and maybe after the event advise how much the donated item raised.

With the help of the Events Team it is possible for local working Guide Dogs to attend your event which will always attract people. Contact local press and radio who love to provide coverage. As for a venue, you will be surprised how many local establishments will help you. It is good publicity and they make money over the bar so are happy to help.
