The guide dog partnership never thought possible…

The guide dog partnership never thought possible…

However, Theo, a golden retriever has become her saviour, forming a truly extraordinary partnership with Katie, who is totally blind.

Complications, following a premature birth, mean Katie suffers considerable physical and learning challenges. The condition, known as Retinopathy of Prematurity, has resulted in her having extremely poor spatial awareness and problems with manual dexterity, making it unlikely that she would have the skills needed to use and benefit from a guide dog.

Theo was originally introduced to Katie as a companion, so that Guide Dogs could assess how she would cope with having a guide dog. The charity had no expectations; however, a bond of trust developed between the duo, and for the first time in her life, Katie, with Theo by her side, gained the confidence and ability to go out on her own.

Her disabilities make independent mobility difficult; however Theo can safely guide her through narrow spaces, and around hazards and obstacles.

Katie is also benefiting from the responsibilities of owning a guide dog, and this has given her greater confidence and independence, overcoming many of the barriers her disabilities had previously created.

She currently lives with her mum Sue (and Sue’s partner Graham), but eventually hopes to move into sheltered housing. To do this, Katie will need greater independence, and Theo will be essential in making this possible.

Katie says:  “Theo is the best thing that has ever happened to me, providing freedom and independence – totally transforming my life!”
