Nominations close for the Guide Dogs Annual Awards this week

11 Jul 2014

Time is running out to make your nominations for the Guide Dogs Annual Awards. All nominations must be with us by mid-night on Friday 18 July.

The Guide Dogs Annual Awards celebrate all that is great about our work to enable people to fulfil their potential. We’re looking for amazing guide dogs owners, incredible guide dogs, life-changing My Guide partnerships, extraordinary young people and people who’ve worked tirelessly to break down the barriers that prevent people who are visually impaired from getting out and about. We’re also looking for an individual or company that has worked in partnership with us and helped improve the lives of people living with sight loss.

Winners will be invited to a glittering ceremony at the London Hilton, Park Lane on 10 December, and there might even be the chance to rub shoulders with a celebrity or two.

Last year’s Inspirational Guide Dog Owner Award was won by Konrad Galen-Bisping. While on duty in the Army, Konrad was attacked by an axe-wielding team member. Despite a horrific head injury, Konrad survived. He spent two years in hospital and rehabilitation, needing 24-hour carers when he finally returned home. He never went anywhere alone.

As well as losing his sight, Konrad developed memory problems and post-traumatic stress disorder. He couldn't walk down the street alone and had panic attacks if anyone was behind him, especially a man.

After being matched with guide dog Radley, Konrad’s confidence quickly grew. They now happily walk around Llanelli together and Konrad has a new wife and three children, yet he will still cuddle Radley and say, “You're the best thing to ever happen to me!”
