Life-changing guide dogs and their owners are new TV stars!

31 Mar 2014

A pair of life-changing guide dogs and their inspirational owners are the stars of Guide Dogs’ two new Sponsor a Puppy advertisements.

Emma and Jazz With Emma's Husband John and sons Luke and OwenEmma Free and her guide dog, Jazz, and Jill Daley and her guide dog, Lucas, each star in a different advertisement, both encouraging the public to sign up to Sponsor a Puppy for just £1 a week.

The first ad, which is 60 seconds long and features Emma and Jazz, is being broadcast for the first time today (31 March). It starts with footage of cute young guide dog pup, and is narrated by Emma and her six-year-old son, Owen. Owen explains that Jazz is special because she can help his mum do all the things which other mums might take for granted, like walking her children to school. The commercial also shows the family enjoying some of the other day-to-day things Jazz has enabled Emma to do, such as going shopping and taking her boys to the park.

Jazz is used to the limelight, as she was named Guide Dog of the Year in 2013 for saving Emma, Owen and Emma’s other son, eight-year-old Luke. The trio were stood with Jazz at a crossing when Jazz suddenly moved back, taking the three with her. Moments later, a lorry mounted the kerb where they had just been standing.

Jill And LucasThe second advertisement, to be broadcast for the first time on 15 April, features Jill and Lucas. Jill is a radio presenter with Insight Radio and in the ad, she shares how she suddenly lost her sight aged 19. When she became blind, Jill says she felt trapped and that her plans for the future disappeared over night. But then she reveals that having a guide dog “set her free” and that he hasn’t “changed her life, he’s given her a life”.

Guide Dogs worked with the advertising agency, RAPP, to produce the commercials, which will appear on ITV1, ITV Digital, Channel 4 and Five.

Maria Novell, Guide Dogs’ Head of Individual Giving, said: “Sponsor a Puppy is vital in helping us raise the funds we need to breed, train and support our guide dogs. The guide dog service receives no government funding so it depends entirely on the public’s generosity.

“Emma and Jill are inspiring ladies who demonstrate just how life-changing having a guide dog can be. We’re sure that when viewers see their stories, they will be happy join our journey towards providing guide dogs to more people who are blind or partially sighted.”
