Appeal for blind and partially sighted athletes – Metro Games

Blind and partially sighted athletes from across the UK are being invited to take part in the Metro Games; a competition for people of all ages with sight loss.  The games, for both adults and children, will be held in London’s Mile End Stadium on Saturday, 26 June.

Supported by charity Guide Dogs, the games include most track and field events. With free entry, and limited offer of subsidised travel to London, plus local university accommodation at reduced rates, over 100 people are expected to take part.  This will be one of the biggest games for blind and partially sighted athletes in the country.

Explains Roy Smith MBE, Chairman of Metro: “We welcome people with sight loss from across the UK, and arrangements will be made to provide sighted running guides for those competitors requesting them.

”We hope that visually impaired children from mainstream schools will take part, as often they don’t have opportunities to compete with other youngsters with sight loss.”

Allan Mabert, from Guide Dogs, a former Paralypian 400 metres runner, says: “We’re delighted to be supporting the Metro Games. At Guide Dogs, we want all blind and partially sighted people to have the same opportunities as their sighted counterparts.  Metro Games allows participants to live their dreams, so whether the event appeals to regular athletes or those who simply want to join in the fun of a competitive track and field event; everyone’s welcome.”
