Go walkies in the Shropshire sunshine
Guest blogger Chris Floyd, District Team Manager in Shrewsbury, writes:
Our plans to mark Guide Dogs Week in the Shropshire area are now firmly set. Working with The Shrewsbury branch, we have ambitious plans for at least 80 dog teams to take part in a 'Go Walkies' event in the very pleasant grounds of National Trust property, Attingham Park, Shrewsbury
Sponsored, named teams will be able to access the grounds free of charge and enjoy a leisurely walk in the autumn sunshine - fingers crossed.
Anyone can register a sponsorship form online and teams can set off for their walk between 10am to 1pm on Saturday 8 October.
If you’re in the area why not get sponsored and join in? To register go to www.gowalkies.org.uk
This is a great way to raise funds for Guide Dogs and to have an enjoyable day’s exercise. Staff, guide dog owners and volunteers will be going along and will welcome any questions on our work.
You could finish it all off with a picnic - a perfect day out!
If you would like to get involved in Guide Dogs Week 2011, please contact your local volunteering office on 0845 371 7771 or your local fundraising team on 0870 600 2323.

Chris, 3:09pm Mon 10 Oct 2011:
A fresh morning at the beautiful National Trust Attingham Park, Shropshire, greeted the staff and volunteers from the Shrewsbury District Team and Fundraising branch on Saturday 8th October. In celebration of Guide Dog's 80th birthday, a sponsored walk was organised to raise money for the organisation. Attingham Park staff had generously provided free entry to participants of the 1 mile length walk, providing a picturesque and safe place for dogs of all shapes and sizes to meet, greet, sniff and socialise. The courtyard at Attingham also provided an attractive backdrop for a Guide Dog's merchandise stall which helped to raise awareness, answer questions and enable people to stock up early on Christmas cards!
The walk itself gave many people and dogs an opportunity to have a good leg stretch, to explore the beauty of Attingham park and most importantly to raise funds for the charity. The event benefited from a good turn out with lots of guide dog owners attending as well as members of the public. A huge effort had been made by all to maximise sponsorship, with some dogs being sponsored with as much as £200! After a couple of laps around the track, the dogs were able to relax in Attingham's outside café courtyard whilst their owners were able to enjoy a well deserved coffee break!
The event was a roaring success, with an estimated total in excess of £2000 being made. A local newspaper reporter was also at the event, catching action shots of the day and helping to raise awareness of the local branch. A huge well done and thank you to all the dogs and owners involved who worked so hard to raise sponsorship money. Your efforts are invaluable to ensuring Guide Dogs are able to continue in their drive to improve the lives of blind and partially sighted people.
