Standing out from the crowd

You may have noticed some changes going on at Guide Dogs. Our new look website is just part of a bigger drive to make sure we get noticed for all the right things.

An estimated 180,000 people with sight loss still find it hard to leave home alone. This is unacceptable. Guide Dogs is developing new services to ensure we can help more of these people to live their lives on their own terms.

We want to be able to provide more life transforming guide dogs. We also realise a guide dog is not for everyone, so we need to look at different services such as sighted guiding, to help people get out and about.

However, we know we are going to need more support if we are going to be able to help more people. We need more volunteers to give their time and we need to increase our fundraising activities.

Currently, awareness of Guide Dogs amongst the UK public is at unacceptably low levels and this not only affects our ability to raise the funds we need, but also prevents us from attracting vital volunteers.

Our new look is just one of the things we are doing to make us more relevant, broaden our appeal and ultimately, bring in new supporters and help us raise more funds. We need to change if we are going to compete with other well known charities.

It is based on the idea of “high visibility”. We’ve chosen the colours to be different, but we’ve also chosen them because we want to be clear, legible and easy to read. Whilst you’ll see this reflected in our new look, you’ll also see it reflected in the way we speak.

We feel confident that it will start to help us really stand out from the crowd.

You don't seem to have an official Guide Dogs Association page on Facebook. Creating one may help to promote awareness. I notice that the USA & Australia, amongst others, do!

Hi Trish, thanks for your comment and for showing an interest in raising awareness of Guide Dogs. We have an official page on Facebook called ‘Guide Dogs for the Blind Association (UK)’, which you can find at this link http://www.facebook.com/guidedogsUK. We also have several other Facebook pages, which include information about specific areas of Guide Dogs, such as events, volunteering and campaigning. As well as this we have an increasing presence on several other social networking and content sharing sites such as Twitter and YouTube, all of which can be accessed via our website homepage. I hope this helps with your query.
