Draft Bill's bark is good but Government needs more bite, says Guide Dogs
13 Dec 2012
Guide Dogs is calling on ministers to back up dog control proposals announced today with compulsory microchipping of all dogs in England.
The draft Anti-Social Behaviour Bill, published today, includes proposals to tackle irresponsible dog ownership. This includes orders which can require all dogs to be kept on leads in particular areas. Guide Dogs will be giving evidence to MPs to make sure that any orders do not impact negatively on guide and other assistance dog owners.
Guide Dogs Head of Campaigns James White said: “We hope the measures proposed in the Bill will mean irresponsible dog ownership is dealt with before the situation escalates to the point where an attack takes place. With eight guide dogs attacked each month, this draft Bill has come not a moment too soon. Now we hope the Government will follow up on its good work by bringing in compulsory microchipping of all dogs in England within two years.”
