Applying for a grant

If you would like to apply for funding, you will need to:

If you would like an alternative format, please let us know by calling 0118 983 8329.

Q: What type of technology or sensory items can I apply for?

A: We will consider applications for technology or sensory items where there is no source of statutory funding, for example:

  • Tablets e.g. iPads
  • Braille devices
  • Laptops and specialist software
  • Video magnifiers (CCTV)
  • Bubble tubes
  • Tactile toys
  • Sensory lights

Q: What if I don’t know which equipment to apply for?

A: You can speak to a member of our Access Technology team, who will help you identify the type of equipment which will be of most benefit. We can also arrange for demonstrations of equipment and software, so you can be sure before you apply that the equipment will meet your child’s needs.

Q: Do you provide funding for equipment used in schools?

A: Sorry, no, all items provided by Guide Dogs’ Access Technology Service are for home use only.

Q: What information will I need to provide?

A: We will need to know how the item requested for funding will be of benefit and how it will improve your child’s or young person's day-to-day life. You will need to include a supporting letter from a VI professional.

Q: Do you means test your grants?

A: No, but you will need to provide a 10% contribution towards the total cost of the equipment if the grant is successful. You will also need to provide a quote for the equipment applied for. If you are unable to source this, our team will be able to help.

Q: Is there a minimum or maximum age?

A: You can apply for funding towards technology or sensory items for children and young people up to and including 18 years of age.

Q: How long will it take?

A: The grant board meet every two months and you will be informed of their decision shortly afterwards. If your application is successful we will order the equipment for you. Delivery is normally within two to four weeks.

Q: Do you run technology events where I can try different devices?

A: We attend Guide Dogs events including Guide Dog Experience Days and Recreational Activity Days throughout the year, where you can meet a member of our team and ask questions. At some events, we also have suppliers and equipment with us, giving you the opportunity to try the products yourself. For more information, please contact us on 0118 983 8329 or our recreational events team on 0118 9838318.
