Recreational activities

Young Boys With Snakes

Our events, specifically arranged for children with a vision impairment and their families, around the UK,  are a great way for families to take a break and meet others in a similar situation, in a safe and secure environment.

Relaxing and having fun can encourage children with sight loss to develop confidence and make new friends. One family who attended a recent event said:

“We had a really enjoyable day with lots to do and lots of professionals on hand for support and information – thank you.”

Representatives of our children’s services teams are present at each event to offer support and discuss any areas of concern you may have regarding your child’s vision impairment.

Children with a vision impairment plus one parent/guardian go free to most events and there is a small charge for immediate family members.

Events include trips to:

  • the pantomime
  • Easter, Summer and Christmas parties
  • a family weekend for families with a child recently diagnosed with a vision impairment
  • family guide dog experience days
  • events in partnership with other charities

Please see our calendar of events below, which is added to regularly.

Each event has a flyer with further information. To request places, a booking form needs to be completed and returned to the Recreation Team who will then make contact with you to confirm places.

Family Guide Dog Experience Day, Leamington Spa
Wednesday 4 April 2018

Leamington Spa Guide Dog Training School, Edmondscote Manor, Warwick New Road, Leamington Spa, Warwickshire CV32 6AH

The Training School is where dogs undergo training before qualifying as a Guide Dog. We are inviting children and young people with a vision impairment and their families to join us to gain an understanding of what it could be like to own a guide dog in the future.

Children will experience working with a guide dog on the harness and handle (with staff supervision), learn about instructions used to support a guide dog as well as feeding and grooming.

Families can bring a picnic and we hope it will be a fun-filled and informative experience for the whole family.
