10 top tips for travelling with your dog
- Make sure your dog is secure in the vehicle either behind the back seats with a dog guard in an estate car or secure on the back seat with a car harness and make sure the dog is wearing a collar with an ID tag
- Make sure you take frequent rest stops
- Always have water and a drinking bowl on board
- Avoid feeding immediately before you travel ideally allow 2 hours between a meal and the journey starting, take a clean-up kit in case of accidents
- Before setting off take you dog for a long walk so they are tired
- Make sure there is adequate ventilation and the temperature inside the vehicle will be comfortable
- Take dog chews but only if you can have a passenger to supervise whilst in the car
- Remember the dog lead, harness, crate, toys, blanket and pet food and medicines for the duration of your stay
- If going abroad make sure you have your pet passport ready and discuss this with your veterinary surgeon as early as possible
- Take emergency numbers for their microchip, insurance and vets near your destination
