Payroll giving

What is Payroll Giving?
Payroll Giving is a simple, tax effective way to give to charity directly from your pay. Surveys show that each month around two thirds of us give to charity. Giving regularly to Guide Dogs is an excellent way to help make the world a better place for blind and partially sighted people.

How does Payroll Giving work?
Providing that your employer offers a Payroll Giving scheme it couldn't be simpler. You authorise your employer to deduct regular charitable donations from your pay. Your employer then pays those donations to a Payroll Giving Agency approved by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). The agency then distributes the money to the charity or charities of your choice.

What are the benefits of Payroll Giving?

  • For you
The agreed deductions your employer makes from your pay are done before you pay tax, which means that you get tax relief included in your donation at your top rate of tax and it is simple to do. For example, if you pay tax at the basic rate it will only cost you £4.00 to donate £5.00 to Guide dogs.
  • For employers
The benefits to your company include a simple way to engage employees thats easy to measure and gives you an opportunity to enter charitable giving awards.
  • For Guide Dogs
The main benefit of Payroll Giving is to create a regular flow of funds for the benefit of Guide Dogs, allowing us to plan ahead with confidence.

How can I find out if my employer offers Payroll Giving?
Ask your employer's payroll department. If they do not offer a scheme, suggest that they start one - it is easy and inexpensive to run. They can find out more about how to get started in the HMRC Guidance for employers.

How do I know if I am eligible to join the scheme?
You will be eligible provided that you are an employee or pensioner and that your employer deducts Pay As You Earn (PAYE) tax from your pay or pension.

Jasmine Hymas and her guide dog Darcy.
I suffered a condition called encephalitis which resulted in sight loss and impaired mobility, and eventually found myself in a residential home for the elderly. One morning I woke up and thought ‘I am not going to spend the rest of my life this way’, and applied to have a guide dog. I’ve never looked back! I lost four and a half stone with my new-found freedom, and I relish my restored confidence. Occasionally I have a mild black out, which can make me disorientated, but all I need to do is instruct Darcy ‘home’, and he will take me there. Darcy not only changed my life, he gave me one back. My guide dog, Darcy – a golden retriever cross Labrador – has had a profound impact on my life.- Jasmine Hymas from Yeovil, Somerset
