Blind children shouldn’t lose out on childhood because they have sight loss

Right now there are 20,000 children with sight loss in the UK, many of whom aren’t receiving the specialist support we can provide. Thousands of families are raising blind and partially sighted children with no help, and some areas of the UK don’t have any mobility support at all.

That’s why we urgently need your help to train more Mobility Instructors to help these blind children. We would be grateful for your donation to help blind children today.

Guide Dogs has been helping visually impaired people of all ages – children, youngsters and adults become independent for 80 years. And over that time we’ve learned that the younger someone is when they are taught sight loss related mobility skills, the more likely they are to live the rest of their life to the full.

We want more blind and partially sighted children and youngsters to benefit from our Children and Young People service, but to do that we urgently need your help today.

From the moment we wake up to the moment we close our eyes and fall asleep, we take so much for granted.

Like being able to understand the difference between a hard or a soft bed, or whether something is big or small.

But these are concepts that visually impaired and blind children can find incredibly difficult to grasp, because they can’t see what someone’s referring to. This can mean that a child with sight loss has a very limited and fragmented idea of the world.
