Week 14 - First Guide Dog puppy class for Quella
Quella attended her first Guide Dog puppy class this week. I was looking forward to taking her, so as to see her reaction to a group of other puppies. Her class is for puppies that are fully vaccinated up to six months of age. The approach to the hall that we use has three flights of steps, also ramps. Quella wasn't too sure about the steps yet, so we used the ramps. I have since found a lesser amount of steps, which she climbs quite happily. Puppy class went really well, and she did everything I asked her to do, we were even asked to demonstrate a certain routine, so well done Quella bella. When we first enter the hall, there is a corner where we all put a toy or blanket that we have brought from home, with our pups scent on it. This is called the enrichment area and it is designed to have a calming effect on the pups, so they can have a good sniff in there, and it will let each of them know, who is in the room, without the need to physically sniff each other, although given the chance they still would. The classes are held on a Friday fortnightly and are really good for the pups development.
Something amused me recently with Quella. I was never sure if dogs recognised different colours. Her puppy bowl is blue plastic, and as she was gulping her food too quickly, and for fear of bloating, I decided to use a different bowl that I have, which is designed to slow down the speed at which they eat, but it is a different colour. When I put it down for her, she backed away. I then had to make a trail with the kibbles leading to her bowl, which she followed and then readily ate her food. I just thought it odd that because the bowl was a different colour she became unsure of it. It did only last the one mealtime, she was fine with it after that.

I trained my old labrador at Wallshaw, Bury where we shared the hall with Guide Dog puppies. Is there anywhere like this available today where I can train my puppy. The experience stayed with him for life. He had beautiful manners.
