Week 25 - Quella's on the right track

I have recently been back to the train station with Quella. As it was a nice sunny day, I decided to sit on the opposite platform with Quella on my lap, with my back to the train, so that she could look over my shoulder, and when the train pulled in, stopped, and then pulled away, she was absolutely fine. I know all the passengers were probably highly amused at the sight of me sitting on the platform, but for me, if it was what it took to put Quella at ease, so be it. I felt happy as it was a move in the right direction. I then stayed on the platform and waited for the next train, which was only fifteen minutes to wait, and this time the train would come in at the platform that we were waiting on, this time I just stood with her, and again she was as good as gold and remained sitting, even when it made a loud noise pulling away.
Whilst Quella was in a confident mood, I thought I would push my luck, so on the same day, I returned to the train station later in the afternoon, to see if she would actually get on the train when it pulled in. Again, she stayed put, I then got on the train first, and Quella quite happily followed me, bless my little sweetheart, I was so proud of her, so her confidence is obviously growing. When on the train she sat for a while taking in her surroundings, and then she lay down so was clearly happy to be on the train. We only travelled two stops, and then crossed the line via a foot bridge, which was a challenge of its own, as it had open steps (which is something that is on the 'to do' list, as part of the socializing process for a Guide Dog puppy) and Quella climbed the steps nice and slowly. We then had a little walk, and caught the next train back, and once again she got on the train without any hesitation.

I'm so glad that Quella is getting confident. Ushi will happily plod on, and just sprawls out on the train. That was a good sign that she felt confident enough to lie down.

I don't really like taking Ushi on shiney polished steps, as she slips and slides all over the place. So that is why I hold onto the handrail so that if one of us falls, then you have the handrail for security. I keep her harness on her back and just take the lead. If I feel her sliding, i'll stop and wait until she gets her balance back.

I wondered where you'd got to! Xxx. Torie and a sleeping Ushi after spending a day on a train!

I have really enjoyed reading your blog. I'm a first-time puppy walker and Buntie is almost 21 weeks so your comments are invaluable. Buntie is very placid and confident and on Thursday we are going on a train for the first time. We have already been on a bus and several ferries. She is fine with lifts and steps. I think I'm very lucky!
