Week 30 - Fear of hand dryers blown away
Usually my week is spent visiting a garden centre or a free run somewhere with Quella, but since her aversion to electric hand dryers, we have been frequenting ladies loo's this week. I did not return to the place that she first took a dislike to them, just in case she related to it and would remember the unpleasantry, and maybe not want to go in that building in the future, which would be a calamity as they do a nice sensibly priced meal in there. I stuck to different supermarkets as they all have ablutions these days. Each day we visited a different supermarket, and the first few we went to she still wasn't too happy, and then lo and behold, we found one that she was quite happy with, and sat as good as gold. What a relief that was as I was beginning to run out of loo's, I always put my back to the dryer and casually put my hand behind my back to activate it, oh, forgot to add that she was munching on a treat at the time, which showed how relaxed she was, as the first time when she wanted to run away, she would not entertain a treat at all.
When Quella first arrived here to live with me it was the vacuum cleaner and lawnmower that she used to run away from, as soon as I got the vacuum cleaner out she would move as far away as possible from it. I then used to leave it in the same room as her and turned off, I would place tiny treats on the base of it, she would then come to explore and take the treats, the same applied to the lawn mower, she soon learnt that they were not a threat, and they both soon became her friend, to the point where, if she is out side when I begin vacuuming, she will come running in and follow the vacuum wanting to play. If Quella is in the kitchen behind the baby gate, I can vacuum the hall carpet right up to the gate without her moving away.
The last week of school term recently, it was sports day at our local primary school, I thought it was a good opportunity to see how Quella reacted towards a lot of children, shouting and cheering each other on to win. So after asking permission to take Quella onto the playing field, we took our place behind the cordoning, and yes there was definitely a lot of shouting and cheering going on, but Quella appeared oblivious to the noise, she was in fact far more interested in lying down and mooching in the grass, and nibbling on it when she thought I wasn't looking.

Sounds like you are doing an incredible job with Quella.

We are about to rehome an 8yr old retiring guide dog named Quella. I guess this cannot be the Quella that you trained. She will be our 3rd retired guide dog and we are so excited about getting her on Friday
