Week 32 - 'Step' and 'Stand'
Quella is now seven months old, so I needed to take her along to the Vet to have her vaccinated against kennel cough. All Guide Dog stock have this done at seven months of age, in preparation for entering the kennels later. Although it is a vaccine, it is not administered by injection, but a liquid which is squirted up their nose. Sometimes bitches need to go into kennels if they have started their season, so cannot go on holiday with their puppy walker, and by having the vaccine at seven months they are prepared, as it is usually around seven months and onwards that the bitch's season starts. Quella was quite happy to let the vet administer the vaccine, and then give her a routine check up, and the vet also weighed her, she now weighs 25.5kg.
I do take her along to the pet shop every month to be weighed, their scales are the platform type on castors, and stored underneath their fixtures, I only use that weight as a rough guide, as I don't know how often their scales are calibrated. The pet shop did once have a nice sturdy platform scale on display, but I was told that parents let their children play on them, thus damaging them, so they changed to the type on castors, that can be stored away out of sight.
Quella will now quite happily place her two front paws on the first step, when I ask her to 'step' and then 'stand' and will remain with them there until I give her the command 'come' to climb the stairs, and the same coming down, she will sit at the top and wait until I tell her to 'come' to carefully descend the stairs.

Hi Liz, I was thinking of applying to be a puppy walker however I work 3 days a week from 8:30 to 4:00. If I had someone to take the puppy for an hour in the middle of the days I work do you think my chances of being accepted as a puppy-walker would be hampered. Thanks

Hi Ian,I can't answer that for sure, but there is a strong possibility that there is another puppy walker near to you that would help out on the three days that you work. Why don't you apply and find out for sure. I do know of puppy walkers that share a puppy walking role, to accomodate working demands....Liz
