Week 37 - Camping trip with Quella
Quella has been on holiday for a few days. We went camping to Dyffryn Ardudwy, which is between Barmouth and Harlech, North Wales, UK, it is a lovely campsite and dog friendly, although they do charge £2.00 per night for a dog, the owners very kindly waved the charge to me as mine are Guide Dog puppies. The pitch I use is at the end of the row, and is fenced off on three sides, I use this pitch a lot, I have had a dog tag made with pitch no. and campsite address and phone number on to put on puppy's collar. On this pitch I can then use a corner for pups toilet needs. Guide Dog pups are discouraged from 'spending' on grass' but I had little choice but to divert a little from the recommended surface. Research has shown that if a pup has been raised spending on grass, they are then reluctant to spend on any other surface, and if the Guide Dog owner does not have grass, it will mean a lot of retraining. On returning home Quella had no problem returning to her usual surface.
From the campsite there is a path leading to the beach, and Quella loved going down to the beach, where she had the time of her life, as she could free run there. It was lovely watching her running in and out of the sea, she was rather disappointed though as she couldn't catch up to the seagulls to play with them.
We travelled into the local town with Quella to do some lead work, and visited some shops with her, wearing her nice blue puppy coat, emblazoned with the words 'Guide Dog Puppy in training'. When wearing the puppy coat, shop keepers can see at a glance that she is a Guide Dog puppy in training, and happily allows her to enter their shop.
Last year in Chester there was a world arts event taking place from July to September. It was called 'Rhino Mania' where large models of Rhino's were peppered around the City. They were all painted with different brightly coloured patterns, by local artists. I featured a photograph of Maya with a pretty one in week 5 of this diary. When the event came to an end, the Rhino's were auctioned, and the money raised went to Black Rhino field Conservation project in Kenya and Tanzania.
One of the Rhino's has been adopted by the owners of the campsite, they have it on display outside of the camp shop, and use it to raise money for charity, I think it has been repainted as I never saw a pink one in Chester.
When Quella first saw it, she raised her hackles and backed away, but once she realised it didn't move she quite happily moved closer to have a better look. Then she obliged by posing for a photograph with it.
