This last week has been 'Guide Dog' week 1-9 October. Where Guide Dogs have been celebrating eighty years since starting in 1931 in Wallasey, Merseyside, UK. Across the country, Guide Dog staff, Volunteers, and Guide Dog owners have all been working hard fundraising, to raise money to help produce more Guide Dog puppies.
Quella and I started the week off really well, we went fundraising in a local town on the 1st October, fortunately the weather was kind to us, as it was a beautiful sunny day, which meant there were a lot more people bustling round this lovely little market town. People were very generous, one chap, who has a blind mother, but is not mobile enough to have a Guide Dog, put a five pound note in my collection box. I do enjoy fundraising as people always want to know about the puppy, and what happens next in the training of the puppy. I then get a lot of their doggy stories which I love to hear about. On this day, I was surprised at how many people also had a black Labrador just like Quella.
Quella behaved really well, as people were passing us with dogs on leads, and Quella didn't show any interest in them, not even bothering to get up from her sitting position. A lot of people thought she was a Guide Dog, and were amazed when I told them she was only eight and a half months old, as she was displaying a much more mature attitude.
I took Quella out for a short break at several intervals.
The following day Quella started her season, so we were not able to attend any more fundraising events, she is grounded now for three weeks. Fortunately I have a large enclosed garden, where I can throw toys for her to retrieve, so she can still get some exercise.
I am also playing indoor games with her. She has a lot of soft cuddly toys who all have names, like Tigger, Mr Badger, Mrs Monkey etc. I have been teaching her the names of the toys and then ask her to 'find Tigger' or 'find Mr Badger' and she is pretty good at finding the toy I have asked for.
