Week 40 - Quella shows great potential
Now that Quella has turned eight months of age, it is time for her to be looked at as she is prospective breeding stock. I took her to Atherton training centre to see a Senior Supervisor, experienced in selecting breeding stock. I was asked several questions about Quella and her temperament. Then Quella was examined, and her jaw checked for undershot or overshot jaw. I was then required to walk Quella to have her gait checked and make sure that she wasn't bandy. When all the checks were complete it was then decided that yes Quella is nice and she is being 'run on' for breeding. The following week I took Quella to Atherton again, this time to see the vet who comes to Atherton to do a clinic, to have her eyes checked, where drops were put into Quella's eyes to dilate the pupils, to enable the vet to examine her eyes, and that test was fine her eyes are alright.
The next stage will be in December when Quella will be eleven months old, this time she will go to Atherton training centre where she will stay for one or two days. She will then be taken for x-rays on her hips, to check for any signs of dysplacia, this will be done under anaesthetic. If the x-rays are satisfactory Quella will leave me shortly after I receive the results. She will enter the National Breeding Centre in Warwickshire, where she will undergo a character assessment test before she will be accepted onto the breeding programme, this can take a week or two. She will be taken out to check her ability to cope in a busy environment, to ensure that she wouldn't pass any weaknesses on to her puppies. If Quella passes this assessment she will then be accepted onto the breeding programme. She will then go to live with a Brood Bitch holder, somewhere within a fifty mile radius of the breeding centre.
If everything goes according to plan and Quella's x-rays are satisfactory she could be leaving me in eight weeks time, so she will have to take her Christmas prezzie with her, to her new home.
