Puppy profiling assessment
Puppy Profiling Assessment (PPA) is a unique tool used by Guide Dogs to assess the temperament of their puppies prior to placement on the Puppy Walking scheme. The assessment involves a series of special exercises undertaken by puppies at the Guide Dogs National Breeding Centre. The assessment results allow the organisation to tailor the selection and training processes to the individual puppy’s traits.
PPA is the result of detailed scientific research by Guide Dogs and our external collaborators spanning a period of over 10 years. It has involved literature reviews, numerous practical observational behavioural projects involving thousands of puppies and extensive in-depth analyses of a range of data from a wide variety of internal sources.
PPA enables Guide Dogs to be better informed about the potential suitability of our stock to be trained as guides. Updated working practices and resources have been implemented to translate this information into a useful tool for Guide Dogs supporting our continuous improvement of quality, success and efficiency as well as dog welfare.
Most importantly PPA provides us with the information to give our puppies the best possible start in life, helping them grow up to be even better guide dogs.
