We have answered some frequently asked questions related to the Tech selector below:
The Tech Selector is a web-based tool that will be hosted on the Guide Dogs website on behalf of the sight loss sector. It enables people to find a list of technology products, apps and software that could be helpful to people with a vision impairment. People can select a number of different category filters to tailor the search results to best fits their needs and circumstances.
The Tech Selector is for people with sight loss, friends, family, and carers of people with sight loss, and professionals assisting people with sight loss.
There are organisations and charities that provide funding for technology for people with a certified vision impairment.
These include:
The products reviewed within the Tech Selector can be purchased from a variety of outlets and the prices can vary throughout the year. As a charity, we cannot endorse purchasing a product from a particular outlet. However, our product pages do link to the manufacturer's website so people can find out more about the items.
The RNIB provides technology advice which includes providing accessible manuals for different types of technology.
You can read more about technology that may be helpful on Guide Dogs Technology pages.
You can also use the Sightline Directory to find organisations that may be able to provide advice and technology demonstrations.
We will add more products to the Tech Selector over time and these will be based upon insight and user requirements, but will be selected by our panel of experts.
The idea behind this resource was originally conceived by the Technology Association of Visually Impaired People (TAVIP) and has been developed further by a sector collaboration, led by Guide Dogs. The following organisations have been involved in the creation of the tech selector: Blind Veterans UK, Glaucoma UK, Guide Dogs, Henshaws, The Macular Society, Retina UK, RNIB, Thomas Pocklington Trust, Technology Association of Visually Impaired People (TAVIP) and Visionary with key input from a panel of professionals, with lived experience, from the following organisations: Berkshire Vision, Outlookers, Seescape, Sight Advice South Lakes, Sight Concern Worcestershire, Sight Airedale and The Braillists Foundation.
Product prices are dynamic and as such may change at any time. To avoid disappointment or discrepancy, we have simply allocated price ranges to the products. We will endeavour to ensure these remain correct but there may be times when prices change due to market factors so please always check before purchase.
The reviews in the Tech Selector have been selected by a panel of experts and people with lived experience from across multiple different sight loss charities. The products are chosen based upon their experience of products to help those with sight loss.
The products reviews from the Tech Selector are simply there to help people make an informed choice. We suggest doing more research prior to purchase to ensure that the product suits your requirements. Having a low vision assessment by the NHS will help you understand your needs.
Find more useful resources on our Technology pages or if you have any other questions about technology for vision impairment, you can discuss your options with a helpful advisor from RNIB’s Technology for Life helpline.
